FEATHER SOULS HEAVY WATERS -2017

SEVEN TREES - 2012

"Seven Trees is the new album from Gothenburg based artist Skatan. You may have seen Skatan opening for Beach House and Efterklang, if so you have no doubt been looking forward to this album with a great deal of excitement. If you have yet to hear of this artist then you are in for a real treat. The album opens with 'Control', a track that arbours so many soothing sounds and vocals that are warm and beautiful throughout. The album continues with one infectious song after another. 'Norwegian Light' is one of the many highlights with haunting, hushed vocals and dramatic ambience. 'Up High' is another moment of magic. This is a tracks that you could listen to a thousand times and never get bored. 'Seven Trees' is an album to listen to from start to finish, it's captivating and offers something new on each listen."

John Bauer-pop.

WE ARE ALL CHILDREN WITH DIFFERENT TITLES - 2010

"Her debut album We are all children with different titles (out on the 4th of August) features two songs in Swedish and nine in English. It is not only a very convincing debut, it is also an obsessive record that sounds like a crying fireplace. Warm. Sweet. Soft. And frightening. Just listen to her voice rising in Ladybird, or getting so intense in Tidsfördriv (future single?). On every song, you wonder if Simone just woke up or if she was about to fall into sleep. Just like a Tim Burton movie (at least his first ones, not his bad last ones), you can picture her songs as some dreamy nursery rhymes or see them as some little nightmarish tales for children. You chose. But do not miss them."

Swedesplease

Skatan is not just another random Swedish band of unknown quantity and quality. This project by Simone Andersson Wingfors has been written about on various Swedish blogs for well over a year (me here) despite the fact that the songs have only been demos on MySpace. Well now is the time to revisit Skaten who has a new record on vinyl and CD titled We are all children with different titles.

Taken as a whole it wouldn’t be incorrect to label Skaten’s new record piano pop. But if you dig deeper into each song you hear elements of more serious music; be it classical, jazz, gypsy, or circus cabaret. I chose the song “Territory” to share with you as it combines many of these elements in one song. I suggest you listen to this one on a full range stereo (hifi) system to get the full effect. The bass is as full as you’d expect from a hip hop track, the scattershot drums pulse and ricochet, and Simone’s voice will give your tweeters (and your emotions) a workout.

Swedesplease

Let me just tell it to you straight. I haven’t heard anything this promising in a long, long time. In fact, in terms of female singer-songwriters it’s been since I wrote repeatedly about Hajen (here) that I’ve been so excited about an artist. Skatan is the band name du jour of the Gothenburg based artist Simone Andersson Wingfors. And she’s the reason I’m all aflutter today.

How is it possible that a Swede can have such facility with the English language? For this English language speaker, who has a hard time searching for the right word or phrase on a daily basis, it’s even more impressive that the song “Shine” has such powerfully effective (yet simple) lyrics. Skatan’s songs have a bit of an improbable and undefinable trait that early Regina Spector songs had. Her vocals can be beautiful one moment and then dangerous the next. Listen for yourself and come to your own conclusion but for now color me impressed.
